Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

The journey begins at Machame Gate. The trail winds through lush rainforest, and you may encounter various wildlife. The first camp is set in the midst of the forest.

  • Altitude: Machame Gate (1,490 meters) to Machame Camp (2,980 meters)

The trail ascends steeply through the forest, eventually opening up to the Shira Plateau. The landscape transitions to heath and moorland.

  • Altitude: Machame Camp (2,980 meters) to Shira Camp (3,840 meters)

The trek crosses the Shira Plateau, providing stunning views of the surrounding peaks. The route then descends to Barranco Valley for acclimatization.

  • Altitude: Shira Camp (3,840 meters) to Barranco Camp (3,950 meters)

The day begins with the challenging Barranco Wall climb. Afterward, the path leads through alpine desert terrain to Karanga Camp.

The trail continues along rocky sections, reaching Barafu Camp situated on a moraine. This is the last camp before the summit attempt.

Summit day begins early, aiming for Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Descend to Barafu for a short rest and then continue to Mweka Camp.

The final descent takes you through the forest to Mweka Gate. You’ll receive your summit certificates before heading to your accommodations.
